âAdrienneâ was one of the few agents who endured even more hardships than Louis. OSS officer Robert Alcorn provided the only account of her harrowing story. He described the twenty-eight-year-old Adrienne as âtall and slender with an attractive figure. Her hair was dark and worn in a long bob, softly curling, and she had pale blue eyes, the envy, Iâm sure, of every brunette who ever knew her.â A Belgian native, she volunteered to work with the OSS in response to the Germans occupation of her country.
On a cold, moonlit night in late 1944, Adrienne and two assisting agents, âPierreâ and âGeorges,â parachuted into a field near the Belgian-German border. Their mission was to work their way into the German interior and report back on troop movements.
Adrienne quickly buried her parachute, jump slacks, and camouflage smock under a thin layer of dirt. As she rose to her feet, she heard rustling in the grass to her left. Footsteps. She was immobilized with fearâuntil she realized who it was.
âPierre,â she whispered, âCâest Adrienne.â
Her husky teammate crept toward her voice. The two spies embraced, though their brief moment of joy was tinged with apprehension. Where was Georges? Had he been injured on landing? Did he need their help? Together they searched for him in the field.
While walking through the tall grass, Pierre grabbed Adrienneâs hand. âIt is better this way,â he said. âIf we are surprised then we are only lovers walking in a field. Right?â
Suddenly a flood of light illuminated the field, stopping them in their tracks. The words âAchtung! HALT!â cut through the silence. Adrienne and Pierre clenched each otherâs hands. They were caught.
Armed Nazi soldiers eerily silhouetted by the floodlights, guns at the ready, walked toward them. The soldiers pulled the âloversâ apart and searched them for illicit items. They found a gun and a knife on Pierre. Under Adrienneâs skirt they found a revolver strapped to her leg. With her skirt still raised, the soldiers poked at her body and made obscene remarks. Pierre lunged at them in her defense, but one of the soldiers thrust a rifle butt in his face, knocking him unconscious.
The soldiers led Adrienne to a waiting car and forced her inside. During the unnerving driveâshe didnât know where toâshe felt a hand slide underneath her skirt and across her upper leg. She instinctively slapped the face of the Nazi sitting beside her. For a split second, her audacity stunned him into silence, but his shock quickly turned into blind rage. He yelled for the driver to pull over.
The soldiers pulled Adrienne out of the car. Four of them took turns raping her.
Adrienne regained consciousness on the cold floor of a barren, brightly lit cell. Its only furnishing was a bucket for her waste. Her body was beaten and bruised. Her spirit was broken. She could hardly move, and didnât want to anyway. She wanted to die. She reached to the back of her head where an L-pill had been concealed in her hair, but her hand touched a bare scalp.
